Colposcopy
A healthcare provider may suggest that you have a Colposcopy if your Pap Smear results are abnormal. One of our gynecologists will perform the Colposcopy. The procedure takes approximately 5 minutes and does not require anesthesia. The doctor will insert a speculum in to the vagina to visualize the cervix. A Colposcope is an instrument that looks similar to a microscope and will enable the doctor to closely examine the cervix. A solution will be applied to the cervix to help highlight cells that may be abnormal. The doctor may elect to take a sample, or biopsy, of the cells that appear abnormal. These cells will be sent to the laboratory so that a pathologist can study them. Based on these findings, the doctor will determine if any further testing or treatment is necessary.
